Story & Mission

Reliable Transportation for the People We Serve

The Kenaitze Indian Tribe was federally recognized as a sovereign, independent nation in 1971 under the Indian Reorganization Act as amended for Alaska. Today, we have more than 2,100 Tribal Members who live across the Kenai Peninsula and beyond. We employ more than 430 full-time employees, part-time employees, and interns.

The Tribe delivers a variety of programs and services that promote the wellness of our people and the community. Access to reliable transportation is crucial to those we serve. For those who don’t have their own vehicle, transportation options on the central Kenai Peninsula are limited.

Kahtnu Area Transit was established to fill in some of those transportation gaps and provide an affordable, accessible and reliable option for Tribal Members and the community.

In 2022, the Tribe was awarded a Federal Transit Administration Tribal Transit Program grant to launch a fixed-route bus service. Kahtnu is the Dena’ina word for the Kenai River. The initial route goes from Sterling to Nikiski along the Kenai Spur and Sterling Highways. A second route, coming soon, will connect Kenai and Soldotna via Kalifornsky Beach Road, following the Kenai River for much of the way.

Our friendly, comfortable, convenient and affordable service is available to anyone in the community.
